I have several of Vaclav Smil’s books.

But here’s what’s worth noting: coal in particular has become the expensive fuel. It’s being dramatically undercut first by natural gas, but also and very powerfully by renewables. How this may change the business plan of the Chinese companies remains to be seen.

It was beautiful.
How timely to read this information. I’m thankful to know that people are aware
and working on protecting the night skies.

One article I read about the dirty little secrets of wind by the IER said outside of Baotou, China said that the rare earth mining not only has huge toxic lakes but creates more radioactive waste annually than US nuclear industry. What we do in Colorado impacts people in China. Also the land use impact of renewables versus fossil fuels needs to be considered since solar and wind have low power denisities (see Vaclav Smil’s book on this). Solar and wind take up significantly more space and land for the power they produce versus fossil fuels. I believe higher efficiency plants, boilers, engines, etc may lower our carbon footprint more than causing problems in other parts of the world.

That grows fairly quickly and sends a strong signal to the market. All fees are rebated equally to citizens as a monthly check; this encourages low carbon decisions. For example in less than 10 years. the monthly rebate would easily rent an EV, so no gas need be purchased except for occasional long trips in the second car.

They’ve happened before and will happen again.
